Friday Gauge Check: Liminal Space

Friday means it’s time for our Friday rituals, the ceremonies of escorting one week out and preparing the next one.  Which, around here, is the Gauge Check, where I take a look at my week and figure out where I’ve come from and where I’m going.  Sometimes there are goals, sometimes I just talk about what’s going on in my life and my crafting.  You are all welcome to join in in the comments.

Liminal space is a space between, neither here nor there, outside the boundaries of established society, and that’s where we are right now.

Moving out of the apartment was exhausting and stressful, but with the last-minute help of a good friend, we managed to get out and on the road just after 10:00 PM.  We crossed the border into California before stopping for the night.  Tuesday got us to LA, where we met up with friends, old and new, before heading north again on Wednesday morning.  We were still exhausted and my back was hurting, so we stopped early, in the little town of King City.  Thursday, we decided that we really needed a break to rest and recover, and the Bay Area seemed to fit the bill.  We found a hotel in Milpitas and took the grand tour of the Winchester Mystery House.  Three hours of walking around and a good night’s sleep did wonders for my back.  Today, we went up to Berkeley and met another friend, and then took the BART across the bay to visit City Lights Books and Artfibers.

I can’t say enough good things about Artfibers.  I plan to do a more in-depth store and yarn review later, but for now I’ll say that I picked up some gorgeous yarn (two colors of Alphabeto) and fiber (an alpaca/silk blend) and that I will probably be ordering more online after I get settled.  One amazing thing about Artfibers, is they sell yarn by the yard – which means that if you want to pick up a couple of yards for a sample, you can, and if you want to pick up exactly enough for your project, you can do that too.  No more stray balls!  The colors and textures are universally gorgeous, too.

On the craft front, I have a confession to make:  I didn’t knit on Monday.  I know.  I was disappointed too.  But by the time I arrived in Blythe, I was totally exhausted.  I made up for it on Tuesday night, when I finished the December Little Shawl!  It’s lovely and warm – I may have worn it walking around San Francisco today, even though it hasn’t been blocked yet.  The first Scottish Boxes sock is also nearing completion; I got a lot of knitting time on the BART from Fremont to San Francisco and back.

That’s all I have to report right now.  Really, I have a lot more to talk about, but I’m still worn out, so it will have to wait until next Friday.

You kids take care.
